Protecting nature, for good.

Sustainability at Comvita

It’s because of nature that we can produce world-class Mānuka Honey, so it’s only natural that we safeguard the Earth and its bees for generations to come.

Comvita was founded with the belief that we should live according to the Māori philosophy Kaitiakitanga (Guardianship). Not only acting on behalf of future generations but respecting the deep relationship between us and the natural world.

Sustainability is more than just a promise on a page, it’s about meaningful and measurable action. Here’s what we’re doing to not only reduce our impact but to actually give back to nature.

Reducing Our Footprint

BEING LEADERS IN CLIMATE ACTION.

Healing and protecting nature is vital to our world’s wellbeing, so we’re working to ensure our entire business is carbon neutral by 2025. We’re also planning to give back to the environment by reducing additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by 2030.

TOWARDS 100% SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING.

All of our paper and cardboard packaging materials are fully recyclable and PEFC/FSC sustainable source-certified. Our labels are made from sustainably sourced wood fibre and plant based biodegradable inks. By 2025, we aim to have completely responsible packaging (recyclable, reusable, compostable).

MAKING OUR HEADQUARTERS
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

Our headquarters, which features one of New Zealand’s largest solarpowered installations, was thoughtfully designed to give back to nature and to keep our team happy. Whether it’s from a lunchtime bushwalk, enjoying the community garden, or a morning tea snack from our onsite organic café.

Working in harmony with bees.

The health of Mother Nature is fundamentally linked to the health of her bees. That is why it’s vital that we not only work in harmony with bees but protect them too.

Helping bees thrive in nature

We’re working hard to improve bees’ natural environments to ensure that they survive for thousands of years to come. Having planted over 10 million native trees to date, we’re helping rebuild vital ecosystems in marginal land, allowing nature to thrive again for future generations. We take pride in keeping our beekeeping operations pesticide-free by placing our hives in pristine untouched areas. So it’s no surprise that our honey shows absolutely no traces of herbicides like glyphosate.

Beekeeping, it's a partnership.

With the help of a passionate team and world-class queen bee rearing site, we’ve introduced one million more bees into the wild (and counting). Making sure they’re nurtured every step of the way, from providing the finest hives to abundant nectar sources.

Taking our bee expertise global,

Protecting nature is a team effort, so we’ve shared our bee expertise with the world. From partnering with independent bee rescuers to save wild hives from extermination in America, to establishing hives and developing sustainable beekeeping practices with communities in Kenya.

Restoring nature's balance.

To help nature thrive, we need to do more than simply safeguard it. We need to restore balance.

Giving back with the Mānuka Reforestation Program.

We’ve planted over 10 million trees in New Zealand (Aotearoa) – helping to remove carbon from the air, improving water quality, and supporting biodiversity. We’re aiming to have planted 30 million trees by 2025.

Teaming up with conservation organization

To protect the biodiversity of our forests, we’ve teamed up with conservation organisations in New Zealand to help with pest control, tree planting, and research the ecological benefits of reforestation.

Protecting wildlife , everywhere
Honey isn’t just for healing humans, it can heal animals too. So, we’ve teamed up with Saving the Wild to use Comvita products to treat wounded animals – whether it’s rhinos and elephants in Africa or koalas and kangaroos in Australia. You can learn more about our partnership here.
